I quit my job. I have enough saved to last me 1 year. I have 365 days to find out how to earn a living. This is Day 3.
Day 3 Video
So on Day 1 I had to ask myself some tough questions.
So I'm going the Bootstrap route. And.. I'm planning to produce several products/services throughout the year. For the full reasoning on why I made these decisions, read What does success look like to me?
Now that I have those tough questions answered, it's time for a game plan! To start off, I'll be updating an old app that I have called Iron HUD.
When I was in college I started a mobile app company called Favasian Products with one of my best buddies, Lonex. I was the engineer and he was the designer. It never really took off but I never closed the doors because... well it barely cost me anything to keep it alive. Plus, every once in awhile someone would download one of the apps we created and I would make a few bucks.
After all this time, I still get over 500 impressions of Iron HUD on the App Store every day and about 1 or 2 downloads a day. At the time of writing this, it costs $0.99, so a little chunk of cash every month. Not bad for not having touched it in quite awhile! So I figured with a nice clean update, I could raise that daily number.
Another plus, which is something I learned from a Tim Ferriss podcast with the author of Dilbert, is that working on an IOS app is a win-win situation. Even if this app doesn't make me any money, it will help reintroduce me into the world of app building. After 4 years of working on straight Ruby on Rails web development at RIGPA, the startup company I was working for, I've basically forgotten everything about objective-c. Which I guess doesn't really matter because I'll be learning swift to rebuild Iron HUD. But basically, I'll be learning a skill set which will help me in the case I ever needed to go "back to work".
Interesting... Ruby On Rails and IOS development are the two top paying skills right now for engineers... Goodie for me!
Time to learn some swift programming whilst I luxuriate myself poolside.
That's Day 3.
Catch you guys later,
