If I could start my entrepreneur journey all over again, I think there's a few things that I would have done differently to make sure it would go a bit smoother. I decided on bootstrapping for many reasons, and I still would do it again, but looking back, I realized how important and beneficial some resources are.
One specifically comes to mind.
I strongly believe that attention, eyeballs, an audience, your following... is the most helpful resource you can cultivate before quitting your job and beginning your entrepreneurial journey.
A following on social media or an email list... they both work because they're a channel to harness people's attention.
With that attention, you can offer up your products or services, ask to download your app or try your new website, or buy your products... for FREE! No ads necessary to get the attention to what you're trying to offer.
And... the larger the audience of that attention, the better. That's because of the law of percentages. For every type of "channel" there is a certain average percentage of engagement. For email, that is around a 3.2% click through rate. For twitter that is around a 1% engagement rate with your tweets. And for Instagram it's something like 4.3% engagement rate.
Those percentages sound low, but if you have 10,000 people in your email list or 10,000 followers on your Instagram account, that means you've got 320-430 eyeballs looking at whatever you're trying to promote!
Will all of those people buy into whatever you're promoting? Of course not! There's also a law of percentages for those people viewing your promotion and who actually buy. But!.. the most important things of note is... People can't buy what they don't know exists.
If I had to start over, the #1 thing I would have spent more time on before I quit my job was cultivating attention, building a following on social and getting that email list built up!
What do you think? Do you agree? What's something you wish you had done differently in the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey? I want to know, comment below!
